The Transfiguration Cross is the result of an extensive search
for a cross design that is both distinctive in appearance and
one not associated with other denominations. The selected altar
cross is fashioned after a 17th century Finnish pattern. It was
crafted in the traditional chip-carving technique of old Scandinavia.
The cross is made of basswood, a wood of medium hardness with
a very fine grain. The design is applied with a pencil and etched
deeply in the wood by carving out wedge shaped chips. The finished
cross is stained with a dark mahogany oil stain and varnished.
A larger version, created using the same technique, will adorn
the outside front of the church.
