As the Cantor at the Church of the Transfiguration, I am twice blessed to be of service. In the early days of the parish, the church had no organist so the congregational singing of modern hymnody was supported by the tape recordings of computer generated accompaniment. Indeed, we did make a "Joyful noise unto the Lord." However, as our new sanctuary, with its magnificent acoustics began to take shape, it became apparent that a change to a capella (unaccompanied) music was both more desirable and even required. It has been observed that our parishioners participate more and sing better when they have only their own voices, unobscured by dead woods and metals to render the praises of God. The chanting of the psalms and all other liturgical settings to Plainsong, Gregorian Chant, and Anglican Chant has brought our worship experience to a level of sacredness we could not have imagined.
